MTK_05, EP

After his highly successful collaborations with fellow Montrealers Julien Roy (as Egg), David Fafard (as Luci) and Ernesto Ferreyra (as Chic Miniature) Guillaume Coutu Dumont continues on his quest for the ultimate ham bone funk recipe on this, his first solo outing. The disc begins with a deep tribal house charmer entitled Ndank Ndank. Cruising at a comfortable 123 bpm, this lush opener builds around a recording captured some years ago in Senegal during a 3 month excursion there. The haunting vocal phrases and nimble percussion lines offer a fleeting glimpse into Coutu-Dumont’s past life as a classically trained percussionist, displaying his deft skills of patient groove construction. Two Load Bangs opens the flip side in high spirits, offering a suggestion of what the results might be like if Chicago’s DJ Deeon and the Yellow Magic Orchestra were left alone in a studio for a few weeks, with it's insistent vocal stabs and cruising synth pop bass. The disk closes with Téléthon, a bouncy affair filled with the good time, corndog melodies that have become his signature, and a vocoded vocal that brings to mind the finest Gin and Juice sippin’, west coast ‘gansta’ rap epics… an entirely new definition for the term ‘G’ funk perhaps? Regardless of what you choose to call it, make no mistake; this latest collection from one of Montreal’s finest is sure to get even the grumpiest dance floors grinning with guilty pleasure.
